چکیده

This paper examines differences in accident characteristics and causation at different blood alcohol levels among 372 accident involved motorcycle riders who were tested shortly after they crashed. The subjects were part of a large, prospective, in-depth study of 1082 accident-involved motorcyclists in Thailand in which investigators went to the scene immediately after a crash to collect and analyze evidence in order to determine how the crash occurred. The crash characteristics considered here include those that have been identified as typical of alcohol-involved motorcycle crashes including collision type, loss of control, running off the road, traffic control violations, precrash & crash speeds. The causation factors include primary cause factors and rider attention failures. Approximately 60% of 372 riders tested positive for alcohol. The frequency of inattention just before the crash increased steadily and almost linearly with increasing BAC. However, most other crash characteristics showed a sudden change in the frequency of occurrence near the 50 mg/dL (.05%) level, then remained relatively steady at higher BAC levels. Compared to non-drinking riders, those with BAC > 50 mg/dL were more likely to be in single vehicle crashes, more likely to lose control, to run off the road, to be inattentive before crashing and to be the primary or sole cause of their accident. These findings demonstrate that when rider blood alcohol level approaches 50 mg/dL (.05%), the rider becomes a significantly greater threat to himself.

Traumatic Brain Injury Associated with Motorcycle Crashes in Wisconsin, 1991-1997

We evaluated the impact of a variety of motorcycle crash related factors, including crash type, speed limit, highway type, demographics, alcohol involvement and helmet use, on the likelihood of being hospitalized for traumatic brain injury (TBI) and subsequent injury severity and hospital resource utilization. Helmet use was found to have a strong protective effect on the likelihood of TBI acro...

A review of risk factors and patterns of motorcycle injuries.

Per vehicle mile traveled, motorcycle riders have a 34-fold higher risk of death in a crash than people driving other types of motor vehicles. While lower-extremity injuries most commonly occur in all motorcycle crashes, head injuries are most frequent in fatal crashes. Helmets and helmet use laws have been shown to be effective in reducing head injuries and deaths from motorcycle crashes. Alco...

Role of motorcycle type in fatal motorcycle crashes.

INTRODUCTION Motorcycles vary in design and performance capability, and motorcyclists may select certain motorcycle types based on driving preferences. Conversely, motorcycle performance capability may influence the likelihood of risky driving behaviors such as speeding. Both mechanisms may affect fatal crash risk when examined by motorcycle type. Although it was not possible to estimate the ef...

Analyzing Motorcycle Crash Pattern and Riders’ Fault Status at a National Level: A Case Study from Iran

Motorcycle crashes constitute a significant proportion of traffic accidents all over the world. The aim of this paper was to examine the motorcycle crash patterns and rider fault status across the provinces of Iran. For this purpose, 6638 motorcycle crashes occurred in Iran through 2009-2012 were used as the analysis data and a two-step clustering approach was adopted as the analysis framework....

Association of alcohol-related laws with deaths due to motor vehicle and motorcycle crashes in the United States, 1980-1997.

The authors compared US motor vehicle and motorcycle mortality rates during periods when each of several alcohol-related laws were in effect with mortality rates during other periods. During the period 1980-1997, there were 792,184 deaths due to motor vehicle crashes and 63,052 deaths due to motorcycle crashes. An estimated 26% and 49% of these fatalities, respectively, were attributable to alc...
